Fortified with prayer, Jesus was now prepared to begin His “passion”. One of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, had slipped away during the Passover meal. He ran to the Jewish authorities and agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Into the Garden of Gethsemane, the traitor Judas led a mixed company of temple guards and Roman soldiers. It was dark and difficult to single out Jesus among His followers. Judas, who knew Him well, stepped forward, identified Jesus, and kissed him on the cheek. Jesus said, “Do you betray me with a kiss?” Peter drew his sword and struck one of the company, but Jesus said, “Put up your sword. Don’t you know that I could call ten thousand angels to help me?” Then the authorities arrested Jesus. As His followers ran for their lives, Jesus was tied with ropes and led away.
